So, you’ve booked your walking holiday and are now starting to think about getting ready for it? A walking holiday is one of the most rewarding ways to explore a new destination. It gives you the opportunity to explore destinations in a completely new way, as well as spend quality time with the people you are going away with – not to mention it removes you from everyday distractions, such as your mobile phone.
The sooner you prepare for your walking holiday, the easier you are going to find it and the less stressful it’s going to be. We would always start with making sure you have broken in your walking shoes – having blisters is not a nice feeling at all! It’s very useful to start getting your fitness up and plan what you are going to bring with you & start buying it.

To help point you in the right direction, we have put together a brief guide on getting ready for your walking holiday. Keep on reading to learn more.
Wear in your walking shoes
If you are going to be wearing new shoes for your trip, the sooner you start wearing them in, the better. There is nothing worse than wearing new shoes and them starting to rub, causing blisters to come up. If you are going to start the walking holiday with new shoes, make sure you bring blister plasters with you and wear the right socks, as this will help protect your feet.
Start getting your fitness up
In simple terms, the fitter you are for your trip, the easier you are going to find it. Walking holidays are aimed at all abilities, from beginners to regular hikers, but a little preparation goes a long way. If you’re new to walking, start with shorter routes close to home and gradually increase your distance and pace. This will help build stamina and give your body time to adjust.
For more seasoned walkers, it’s still a good idea to replicate the conditions you’ll face on holiday. That might mean practising on hilly terrain, carrying a backpack, or walking for several days in a row to get used to sustained effort.
Plan what you are going to bring with you
Fail to prepare, prepare to fail – this saying is very true. As soon as you have booked your breakaway, this is when you can start preparing all the different things that you are going to need. Begin planning what you’ll need, from footwear and clothing to training and researching the route. The more organised you are in advance, the smoother your trip will be, allowing you to relax and enjoy the experience once you’re out on the hike.
When is your walking holiday and where are you going for it? Have you done many walking holidays in the past, or is this your first time? What do you think is really important when getting ready for your hike? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
